Calistoga’s first major settler, after the Wappo Indians, was Samuel Brannan, who came to the area in the early 1987’s after hearing of the “healing” hot springs. He purchased a chunk of land and decided to build a resort. He wanted to make it reminiscent of the springs of Saratoga, New York, and name it as such. However, when he was making this statement publically, he had supposedly had a little too much of the Valley’s wine and misspoke, saying this would be the “Calistoga of Sarifornia” instead of the “Saratoga of California”. The name stuck and has been Calistoga ever since.
Visitors to Calistoga can visit the famous Calistoga Beverage Company, the bottlers of the famous Calistoga Brand Mineral Water, as well as the Indian Hot Springs, where Samuel Brannan built his hot springs resort. Be sure to stop at the city’s many restaurants, as well, to get the full experience.
