About St. Helena

St. Helena was initially incorporated in March of 1876 on land that was first settled by the Wappo Indians. There are a few theories of how the city was named, the most popular being that it was named after Mount St. Helena, which stands to the north of the city. By 1860, notable winemakers such as Charles Krug had begun planting vineyards in the rich soil that St. Helena offered and helped give rise to the region’s wine industry.
Soon after, more farmers and settlers came in and started to plant more vineyards, which started to draw tourists to the area. Even during the prohibition, many people came to the Napa Valley, more specifically St. Helena, to purchase bootlegged wine and liquor. Highway 29 became one of the most travelled roads in the whole state.

St. Helena boasts many historic and household names such as V. Sattui, Charles Krug, Sutter Home and Beringer. Also located in St. Helena is the California Campus of the famed Culinary Institute of America, featuring the Wine Spectator Greystone Restaurant, cooking classes and workshops, and the Spice Islands culinary marketplace. There are several other restaurants and wineries to choose from, so make sure to take your time when you visit St. Helena properties for sale.
